“Hang Obama” Gaffe by Romney Causes Stir
Oh dear oh dear. What praytell goes on in that Mint Romney mind? Not only does he believe he becomes ruler of a planet in the celestial temple when he dies, he also thinks it’s a good idea to use the word ‘hang’ and ‘Obama’ in the same sentence.
Speaking at an Americans for Prosperity dinner, Mint said:
“Reagan came up with this great thing about the ‘misery index’ and he hung that around Jimmy Carter’s neck and that had a lot to do with Jimmy Carter losing”…”Well, we’re going to have to hang the ‘Obama Misery Index’ around his neck.”
Then the kicker: “I’ll tell you, the fact that you’ve got people in this country really squeezed, with gasoline getting so expensive, with commodities getting so expensive, families are having a hard time making ends meet. So, we’re going to have to talk about that, and housing foreclosures and bankruptcies and higher taxation. We’re going to hang him, so to speak, metaphorically.”
Let’s be clear here. Due to hundreds of overlapping variable contemporary notions of race, social norms, American history and cultural alertness, that is NEVER okay. Especially from a person who wants to be the representative of the American people.
Yes, Republican candidates have certain verbal restrictions when discussing the president because he is biracial, and yes, that sucks for them. But it only sucks for them if they’re idiots who can’t negotiate the social arena of our nation.
This was not a verbal gaffe, it was a gaffe of judgement. And with judgement being a key component of President Obama’s victory last election, things don’t look good in the Romney camp.
Boston Globe reports that:
Romney almost immediately caught himself, with the English major declaring “metaphorically” speaking, but the mix of nervous laughter with applause indicated at least some in the audience realized its potency.
